Quiver - take better notes App Reviews

Great all around note app

I’m not a developer, and I’ll never use the developer-orientied features. But don’t let those features stop you from taking a look at this great notes app. I tried it for a few days and find it to be the perfect notes app. I consider it the successor to the amazing shareware notes app nvALT. The only thing that would make it even better would be an iOS companion. I’ve contacted the developer with several questions, and he responds almost immediately. Great app, great support!

Great in itself, but not portable

First, I want to say that what I consider to be the needed features of a notebook may not be yours. But for my uses, Quiver seems promising, but alas, cannot provide a much needed feature for me: portability. Quiver uses a JSON-based backend. This is good since it can be placed under version control. But, it leaves zero room for editing the notes without Quiver. I keep my notebooks in a git repo. 99% of the time, I edit them on my mac. But there are times when I have to edit either on a linux machine or on my mac but over SSH. It is really not possible to do this. Instead using a purly markdown based notebook has been much easier. I can still include code and images to my hearts content. I can also still use MathJax for LaTeX. But I am not limited to using this app. Plus, in the (unlikely) event that something breaks, either in the app or the OS, I am not locked in. I can move my notebook anywhere at any time. Now, if that limitation doesnt bother you (though I think it *should*), Quiver seems like a great app. Cleanly built with good design.

Handling LaTeX, code, and Markdown is killer

This app is rapidly becoming an Evernote replacement for me. As soon as the mobile app is available, I’m switching. The UI is intuitive, the search is fast, and it lets me combine and preview code, Markdown, and LaTeX outside of the web. No other app has done that for me.

Please add a feature of “Backup All Notebooks"

Really disappointed with the latest update v3.0. Two big problems: 1. The global search doesn’t highlight the matched searching result. 2. The search pop up window blocks the content of the notes being searched. Please please please fix them.

Spellchecking within markdown cells as needed

I really wish I could use this app more but the lack of spellchecking within markdown cells makes it too hard for me to use. If only our smarter...

The best note taking, programmer’s notebook, markdown editor, period.

Quiver... The ultimate programmers notepad and Markdown editor rises above the rest. Firstly, the concept of "cells" within each note is amazing. I love being able to add a Markdown note and then a beautifully formatted code block right below it. And I find that in larger files, the use of multiple cells makes it lightning fast where other Mardown editors would chug. And secondly, the "scroll sync" between edit and preview windows...... I cant stress enough how great Quiver solves this problem. When I dove into LightPaper this was one of my biggest problems. Youd scroll in the edit window and would not see the corresponding spot in the preview pane. I have intensely vetted LightPaper, Write, Ulysees, Mou, Atom and many more and landed on Quiver with great hopes that the developer will produce an iOS version. By the way, I use Quiver with Boxcryptor/Dropbox so my Quiver library saves to Dropbox fully encrypted and is available as JSON files when I decrypt it with Boxcryptor on my iPhone. Its super sick.

My dream app

The _only_ downside to this application is that I can’t use it in my work environemtn where I’m forced to use Windows. That’s my only flaw! This is the dream application I’ve been looking for to track notes, snippets, etc. I’ve tried using personal wikis but they lacked the ease of use for cutting/pasting images or syntax highlighting. MS One Note (plus an additional add-on) got a little close, but using that application is a nightmare. I can’t stop raving about this app!

So close, yet so annoying

I really hate it when an application claims to support Markdown but then implements their own specific version of Markdown that’s incompatible with others. After paying $10 for the app and then importing a year’s worth of Markdown notes, I discover that they’re basically all unreadable because it has arbitrarily inserted line breaks at the ends of lines (“normal” markdown requires an explicit two spaces at the ends of lines to force a line break). Yes, it’s a small thing, but it’s not worth my time and energy to go through and re-format a few thousands notes just to make them match this application’s non-standard implementation.

great for code!

I am leanring how to code PHP, HTML5, CSS3 and Java. This app is fabulous at allowing me to turn text into code! It even recognizes code and comments! Above a section of code I place an explanation in plain text with anyformat MS Word allows :) I love the folders, and tags for searching and organizing. I serously cannot find a flaw!!!

Best note taking app for Mac OS X!

After trying Ulysses, NoteSuite, EverNote and countless other note taking apps, I finally found Quiver. Its cleaner and faster than the convoluted EverNote UI, its also a lot cheaper (no recurring subscription fees like EverNote has!), its fully customizable via CSS (I love that I can easily set the default text size of my notes to a bigger font, for example), and the support for code-formatting and highlighting is awesome. I also like that I can use simple rich text formatting instead of being forced to use Markdown. And the full-screen presentation mode is excellent, as well as the ability to sync notebooks and notes easily via Dropbox or iCloud Drive.

I’ve just dropped evernote

Every time i tried to paste a JSON object in evernote it was a headache because it doesn’t accept starting “{“s, with quiver i have the ability to paste code in several languages and add my own notes. I think is great it should booster the purpose of my code notes. So far is great, I haven’t evaluated syncs between my other computers, and i would love to know how to highlight specific lines within my code blocks.

Great note taking app for all CS students.

Definatly the best app for every computer science student. Makes notes look nice and easy to read. A+ to the developer.

Excellent writing and note-taking app

Great notetaking app for the technically minded, or for writers who want real markdown (rather than the mangled Markdown that Ulysses uses). JSON format means you can still get at all your note contents even if development ever stops.

The Best

I’ve been late writing this review but rest assured: Quiver is awesome. The syntax handling, being able to mix code and text, and support for multiple Notebooks make this the go-to coders notebook app. On top of which, the developer is super responsive. Any time I’ve found an issue he’s back to me within a day if not sooner.

Excellent

Works well, is light on system resources, and imports Evernote notes very well with formatting intact and attachments (can take some time for large libraries and may appear frozen as it did on my older machine, but be patient). I really like the ability in 3.01 to change the window layout by swiping.

thumbs up

Exactly what I’ve been looking for. Close to perfect.

My favorite purchase of the last year

Quiver is amazing. My habit of opening Sublime for text notes, Atom to format JSON documents, or Keynote to give a presentation at a tech meetup has all been replaced by Quiver. Every update just makes the experience better - these guys just understand a developer’s workflow and how to best be a part of it.

Fabulous Application

As a developer I am contantly looking for a note taking application that supports things like markdown and code snippets, this app makes things like that a breeze. Moreover, the organization of the overall application makes navigating and managing your notes easy as pie. A few other notable things I personally like about this application: customizable with color schemes, presentation mode, filtering/search for notes, exporting (in multiple formats…this is really nice), and last, the app is solid. I have had no issues with lag, freezing up my system, or any such problems…it just hums along. I am really impressed with this simple application.

It’s great but missing one thing…..

This is a great app and nearly perfect for note-taking on code chunks. I love the use of Cells for different formats. That said, part of coding is being able to visually represent how that code works. Sometimes that means taking screen shots of the story board, phone screen shots, etc. This app could really use the ability to resize and maybe even crop images. Sometimes the pictures are simply too big and it is just kinda dumn to have to go to a graphics editor to do something as simple as resize.

Perfect

This app is quickly becoming an essential part of my toolkit. It’s so powerful and yet so simple. I love the interface and how easily it lets me store and retrieve information about the different projects or tools I’m working with. A++
